What is a Freedom Year?
It is the year Compound projects that the income from your investments could cover your living costs for life — the year paid work becomes a choice rather than a necessity. It is calculated from your own assets, debts, super and spending, not from a rule of thumb.
How is it different from the 4% rule?
The 4% rule gives you a balance to reach. Compound gives you a year, and gets there by projecting your actual position forward: tax on drawdowns, capital gains on assets you sell, and super being preserved until 60. A rule of thumb ignores all three.
Does it work if I want to stop before 60?
Yes, and this is the case simple calculators get wrong. Compound runs a two-phase model: your accessible investments fund you from the year you stop until super unlocks, while preserving enough that the two together last once it does.
